In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. For regulated nurses and physicians, keeping resuscitation and first-aid skills current is part of an annual competence cycle and is often an employer requirement; for health care aides it is a condition of the role. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Nurses in Alberta are regulated by the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA), which run an annual Continuing Competence Program (CCP) under the Health Professions Act. Registrants complete a self-directed learning plan, required education and a self-assessment, and must have accumulated practice hours; on renewal they attest to completion and keep records for five years, subject to audit. Physicians are regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
Nursing standards require registrants to maintain the competencies their practice demands and to be able to act in an emergency. Self-directed learning under the CCP may include clinically relevant training such as BLS or CPR, and in hospital and continuing-care settings a current BLS or CPR certificate is generally an employer requirement rather than a licensing condition.
Continuing competence is mandatory: the annual CCP under the Health Professions Act combines a self-directed learning plan, required education and self-assessment with 250 practice hours, but it does not prescribe a fixed number of continuing-education hours; records are kept five years.

For support staff, Health Care Aide (HCA) programs and supportive-living and continuing-care employers — settings regulated under the Continuing Care Act — generally require completion of CPR and first-aid certification. A recognized standalone first-aid/CPR certificate is a required component held in addition to the HCA training, kept current and renewed on schedule, and it is the credential the employer verifies.
